Modern Tradition Seminar – Brazil (Rio de Janeiro)

This meeting will discuss the reception, appropriation and interpretation of the modern tradition in and from Latin America. The fact that it will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will enable the participants to rethink the role of the modernity and its worldwide diffusion.

The seminar will try to respond to the main question of how can we define modernity in so-called peripheral regions and cultures? Or, put in another way, how can we define modernity without thinking about its global (or universal, using a modernist term) quality, but instead embracing all the conflicts and accommodations within the local cultures?

Some topics will be of special interest, such as:

• Modernisms: reception and interpretation of different European artistic movements  in Latin America;

• Cultural identity and global modernity: combining nationalistic and modernist rhetoric in the processes of independence and modernization;

• Art systems in Latin American:  Academies, artists groups, market, art critics and the diffusion of modernity;

• Visual modernity in Latin American: the dialogue between global and local traditions in the development of the modern visual in each country.
